Woodbury Park salutes and says goodbye to a dear colleague in Jack Netherton

Last month through this column I gave an insight into how the ‘Netherton Trophy’ came into being, writes John Bridgman.

Thus it is with deep regret that I should now find myself reporting that Jack Netherton passed away last weekend after a short period of illness.

Our thoughts and prayers go to his daughter Rachel, husband Rob, and his much loved granddaughter Rebecca. For my part I knew Jack for many years as his partner in the Emerton Court competition in which we reached four semi-finals together. He was certainly a stickler for the rules of golf, and woe betide anyone making a noise while he was readying to play his shot!

If there is a golfers heaven I know he will fit right in with those who have gone before. So, from me personally, may god bless you old friend.

Prior to the sadness of such news the competitions and matches have been played in good spirit by many who would have known him, and will honour him when the trophy is presented on Captains Day evening.

Royal North Devon Golf Club Seniors came to town celebrating 150 years of golf. We could not let that pass us by, so we started by winning the match. After the dinner and speeches they presented a flag to us and we a specially made cake to them. That, I understand went ‘down’ very well indeed.

For those who did not make the team played out a stableford qualifier which Adrian Foster took the honours with 39 points.

Peter Warner 38, beat Mike Dickens into third place on 37. The midweek competition was also a stableford and Peter Lawrence 41 beat Alan Richards into second place on 40. Third was John Dick on 36. The weekend event was an individual stableford and a four ball betterball for the ladies.

Division one saw John Anderson first home in 40 points. The minor places had to be settled on count back with Jonathan Oram-Evennett edging out Master David Cockayne after both finished with 38 points.

Division two had Neil Rice scoring 39 whilst Roy Barber and Mark Hayne needed to be separated by count back, finishing with 38 apiece.

Division three saw recent ‘hole-in-one-winner’ Domonic Wilson the overall winner with 43 points. Ian Lake was second with 41 and Stuart O’Higgins third with 40.

The ladies Ping 4ball better ball ended with lady captain Sara Beaven and partner Angela Mullerworth (previous lady captain) scoring a mammoth 43 points.

They will play the next round ‘if’ their score is high enough!

So, that was the week at Woodbury, touched by a tinge of sadness. Here’s to the week ahead, happy whacking, Cheers John.
