The past week at Woodbury Park has been an eventful one considering the amount of friendlies and club competitions that have been held, writes John Bridgman.

First up was an annual match played at, and against Sherbourne Golf Club.

Woodbury Park friendly match organiser Peter Baldwin reports on the good time enjoyed by the team in a hard fought match with a strong Sherbourne team that emerged 4-2 winners, so there’s much to do in the return match here at Woodbury Park in September.

Sampford Peverell visited for a match played on the Acorns course. The Mid Devon side enjoyed their visit, but were on the wrong end of a 5-1 score line! Well done, to the Acorn fellahs!

The Oaks course staged a midweek stableford played that saw Alister Bribey win with 36 points. The minor places saw Caspin Sandry edge out the in-form Jamie Davidson on countback after both finished with 35 points.

The annual meeting between the Woodbury Park and Exeter Golf and Country Club seniors took place last week.

After experiencing 30 mph winds and a deluge of hailstones they had to return home sheepishly, after losing six-and-a-half to one-and-a-half!

Prior to that the remaining seniors at roll-up time also played a stableford competition on the Oaks. Don Johns, Adrian Foster and Bill Mason eclipsed the rest by scoring 82 points. Nearest to them were the trio of Ray Dillon, Roy Barber and Peter Warner on 74 to take second place.

Next were Terry Welsh, Simon Davies and Andrzej Sobczak also with 74. At least it kept them off the streets and out of harms way!

Last weekend, one of the club major’s, The Netherton Trophy took place. The Netherton family have had a lot of history at Woodbury with Jack, a low handicapper playing in most of the representative teams since the early 90’s. Wife Sonia became ladies’ captain at the same time when Nigel Mansell became the men’s captain. That apart, the men’s overall winner was Chris Turner. Many congratulations to him. It was a beautiful day, but many struggled to make headway playing from the gold tee’s. Another factor was the amount of run on the ball causing many to adjust their approach to the game.

The ladies winner was Mickie Ward who I think surprised herself when it seems her day went so well. Well done, to everybody this week, but take the time to look at the rule book to refresh your memory, it could be the difference between winning and losing. Happy whacking.
