Woodbury park has been a busy place over the past week, writes John Bridgman.

The club has seen guests arriving from far and wide and this resulted in a cross section of teams, some playing for charity, together with a group of old school chums, one of which was our MD Joe Hammond!

He could only afford a welcoming round before managing his busy schedule here.

Most disturbing was a cluster of chaps from down Plymouth way, whose course had recently been vandalised in the dead of night by persons unknown. They evidently sprayed every green in pitch black darkness, creating untold damage. It doesn’t bare thinking about!

So what about our own busy greens? The Woodbury Park seniors kicked off proceedings with a Texas Scramble and first to the winning post were Alistair Robertson, Bryant Bellars and Andrzey Sobczek scoring 70 points.

They were closely followed by three more teams who each scored 71 points and had to be seperated on countback. Second were David Morris, Kingsley Bungard and Norman Baker, third were Bryan Smith, John Cade and Tim Rufus. Fourth were Steve Andrews, Dave Freeman and Terry Tilbury. Over on the “Acorns” course in midweek, Pat Thomas ran out the winner with 34 points, beating Raymond Burroughs into second place on 33, and Derek Knibbs third with 32 points. Highlight of the weekend on Sunday was a splendid achievement by John Mills to win The “Lombard Trophy” in very windy conditions. As a consequence he gets to go to the Regional Final at Saunton Sands to play alongside our Golf Professional in the competition..Also on the same day our Lady Captain, Sara Beaven, and partner Angela Mullerworth won the “Western Morning News” Foursomes, qualifying to play in the regional event at a place and time to be confirmed. Well done to all concerned. That’s about it from me , but rember to keep your eye on the ball, swing steadily but majestically, and enjoy every moment. Happy whacking!!!!!
