Archant

The Woodbury Park ladies once again proved that winter conditions don’t deter keen golfers and after a very frosty start to their stableford competition the sun came out, making a delightful spring like day, writes Carole Pye.

The Acorns was won by Hilary Richardson with 28 points whilst Marleen Johnson (42) took the Oaks ahead of Sue Persey on 40.

There was an excellent showing for the seniors who played a team stableford.

Derek Knights, Martin Creed and John Man (88) just nudged out Ian Marvin, Bill Mason and Terry Walsh scoring 87.

The change-over of the captains, one of the biggest occasions of the year at Woodbury Park, took place last Sunday.

The day usually starts with a Texas Scramble followed by the captains’ ‘Drive In’ then a meal and speeches. Unfortunately, the atrocious weather called a halt to the ‘Texas Scramble’, but the rest of the day went ahead as planned.

The ‘Drive In’ involved last year’s captains finishing their year by putting out on the 18th from where they landed after their drive a year earlier.

The incoming captains, Paul Heys (mens), Sara Beaven (ladies) and Chris Padget (seniors), drove over the lake on the 18th hole to get as near as possible to the pin, (not an easy task with a howling wind and an audience).

This very popular day concluded with presentations and fund raising speeches on the 2014 charity which is Little Bridge House based at Barnstaple, a hospice for children with life-limiting illnesses. Various biddings resulted in an excellent collection of £1,000 to kick start this year’s fund raising for a very worthy couse.

The final figures for last year’s charity ‘Balloons’ has not yet been confirmed, but to date over £7,000 has been raised with more to be confirmed.

A delicious meal was followed by speeches to conclude this ever popular and successful day.
