Sidmouth 7, Withycombe 4
Withycombe Under-9s were beaten in their opening game of the new season, but they gave a good account of themselves in an entertaining encounter.
Withy settled quickly into their stride and Curtis Frazer linked well with Tom Pidgeon, and was unlucky not to get the game off to a flying start by narrowly missing out on the honour of being the scorer of the first try of the season!
Ebony Mardle, Frazer and Baxter Williams put in some try-saving tackles before the hosts opened the scoring. Parity was restored quickly as Jaydan Marles weaved his way to the line. Shortly after the restart the hosts increased their lead and threaten d to go further ahead only to be denied by some great defence with a highlight being a superb try-saving tackle by young Marles. After Sidmouth scored a fifth Withy found s new tempo and tries in quick succession from Harry Hart and Marles set things up for a grandstand finish. Sidmouth went into a 6-3 lead, but Withy came straight back to score through Frazer and the hosts had the final word with the game’s 11th and final score.
Defeat was a disappointment for the Withy team, but they can take great heart from the fact that if they carry on with similar attitude they will get their just rewards.
