Withycombe Under-8s were deserving winners of all four matches that were played against Sidmouth at Sidford.
Lewis Tose and Jack McBryan made their debuts in a match day squad of 15 which led to four matches being plated ensuing plenty of playing time for all involved.
All four games were entertaining and showcased the new skills learnt during the last month.
On pitch one, with Otto Montgomery-Ames and Jack MacDonald-Brown in fine form and Thomas Lawrence marshalling the team superbly from the front the result of game one was always going the Withies way. Some straight running from Max Rowley and Charlie Tucker eventually saw them to a 7-3 success.
On pitch two Withy were equally impressive with Tose marking his debut with a four try haul. Determination from Ben Jeffery and Tyler Gover led to many tags being taken and Withy ran out 8-4 victors.
After a break the sides swapped opponents and both Withy teams continued where they had left off!
Montgomery-Ames once again demonstrated his power as he made seven straight tags to force turnover ball. The support came from Abigail Cook and Harry Dobrijevic and Withy ended the contest as 7-6 winners.
The last game of the day produced some fireworks from Jamie Thompson and Abigail Cotter as both eagerly warmed to the challenge ahead against a weary Sidmouth side. With just minutes remaining the move of the game saw the ball passed around all Withycombe players without one tag being taken and a smart pass inside from Tose saw Kieran Long race clear to score and Withy wrapped up a 10-4 triumph.
This was an excellent way for the Under-8s to start the season and many thanks must go to Sidmouth for their hospitality and welcome once again. If this is an indication of what’s to follow from this team this season then Raleigh Park could be the place to be on Sunday mornings to watch free flowing progressive rugby with the stars of the future.
