Plymstock 1, Budleigh Salterton 2
Budleigh took over at the top of the South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division with a workmanlike performance at Dean Cross, writes Alan Beer.
The Robins made a positive start to the game and home keeper Paul Pethick pushed Mark Lever’s shot away for a corner after just three minutes.
Ten minutes later and The Robins had missed two more chances, one from a cross through the box that Josh Sale could not find a finish for and then when Peter
Grover headed wide from Lever’s cross.
In a goalless first half the nearest the home side came to scoring was when a 20-yard shot from Aaron Hulme hit a post.
The Robins started the second period looking much more determined and
were two goals up inside five minutes!
The first arrived from a Tim Nield cross which Lever headed on at the near post and player-manager Danny Williams fired in from the back of the 6-yard box. The second came when the hosts failed to clear and Lever was on hand to slot in the loose ball. To make matters worse Plymstock were then reduced to 10 men after Tom Cole got his second yellow card.
The 10 men still managed to reduce the deficit when James Yates took a free kick from 20-yards which was deflected past Pullin.
With the last kick of the game George Pannell, on as a sub, raced clear of the home defence, but his shot flew fractionally wide of the mark.
The Robins sit top with neighbours Exmouth Town second. The Southern Road men have played four games fewer and have 23 points to the Robins’ 24 point haul from 13 matches.
Budleigh team: Pullin, Pallett, Carr, Sale, Nield, Hancock, Schlaefli, Wright, Lever, Williams, Grover. Subs Pannell, Turner, Everest (all played), Greenslade.
On Saturday Budleigh entertain 11th placed University who have won just one of their six away games in the league so far this term, that a 4-1 success at Totnes and Dartington.
