Wellington wins the Brian Worts Shield in last Exe Table Tennis Club event of the season

PUBLISHED: 09:34 15 May 2014

Exe Table Tennis Clubs season has come to an end with its annual junior skills tournament, writes Richard Wellington.

Twelve junior members took part to win the Brian Worts Shield.

They competed in six table tennis skill based games designed to test their accuracy and fitness, but allowing all abilities a chance of winning. After five games there was no clear winner and all would be decided with a game of ‘round the table’ where, after returning a ball from head coach Howard Back, the players run around two tables before taking their next shot and losing a life if they miss a shot.

Top seeded players were handicapped by one life. After a frantic ten minutes Matthew Wellington was declared the overall winner with all his lives still intact and Joel Potten a close second. Certificates for the ever popular junior league were presented to Division Three runner-up Adam McGorrigan, who has played exceptionally well for the short time he has been with the club and Division Three winner Jared Guy.

Hayden Boatman won Division Two with Yana Tushingham one match behind in second place. Division one was fought out between the top seeded under-15-year-olds at the club. The top place was decided with a final match between Cassian Tushingham and Matthew Wellington. Tushingham took the first two games 11-5, 11-9. Wellington fought back in the third winning 11-9, but lost the fourth 11-5. Exe Table Tennis Club will restart in September with an Open Evening. The club welcomes players of all ages from nine years old to 70 plus and from complete beginners to league players and is family friendly.
