Ninety-seven members took part in the monthly Medal at East Devon on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.
Conditions were as good as they get; clearish skies, a slight breeze and the course in its usual excellent condition. There we were in the car park, changing our shoes, putting bags on trolleys and thinking, ‘This might just be the day when I qualify for Augusta’. A few minutes practice putting and a couple of swipes with the driver in the net – either, ‘Why do I need to practice – I played only a couple of days ago? Or you arrive at the tee too late to have even a practice swing! But you’re still hopeful and looking forward to the round, then, ‘bang’; you hit the ball on the heel and send it rocketing into the holly bush to the left. ‘Here we go again’, I hear you say as you play three off the tee – straight down the middle. ‘Why didn’t I do that the first time?’ – the oft heard cry!
There were some who had no such problems; although he didn’t win the competition, David Blick’s round is worthy of note. He had a gross 68, but playing off plus one, (that means he is one down to the course before he has hit his first shot – dream on, the rest of us!) that gave him a net 69. His handicap is now plus two. Well done, David.
The winner of the monthly medal was David JP Watson with a superb net 64 from a handicap of seven (now five). Excellent play, David. The other leading scores were; in division one, 2, Leigh Jones, net 67 (3); 3, Jim Colvin, also net 67 (3), placed third on countback, 4, Guy Peters, also net 67 (6 now 5) and placed fourth on countback.
Division Two (I was in that once!); 1, Mike Trapnell, net 69 (13 now 12) Well done, Mike, 2, Mark Coles, net 69 (11); 3, Danny Barrett also net 69 (13). Danny’s name has been in lights on quite a few occasions this year – Augusta beckons, Danny!
Division Three; 1, Eric Biddulph, net 65 (16 now 14) that’s excellent play, 2, Bill Coles, also net 65 (16 now 15), well done, Bill, 3, Kelly Hughes, net 67 (21 now 20)
There was a two’s pot of £144 to be shared between 18 players – David Watson, James Thomas, David Blick and Leigh Jones had two each.
