Wasps 56, Firebirds 24
This was always going to be a tough start to the season for Wasps as they came up against a strong Firebirds side, many of their players returning after pregnancy.
Firebirds won the first centre pass, but Wasps were quick to steal possession back and find the ball in the safe hands of their goal shooter, Helen Chester.
Once in front there was a steely resolve from Wasps to hold it and they powered their way to a 15-5 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Wasps newcomer Cat Mills made an impressive first start, working tirelessly as wing attack and forming a great partnership with the team’s regular centre, Sasha Podbury. Defence trio of Millie Cooper, Jo Leitch and Louise Passmore worked tirelessly restricting Firebirds’ shooters and intercepting numerous balls.
The second quarter saw Wasps extend their lead to 29-8 at the interval.
In the third quarter Wasps’ goal attack, Julia Harvey proved to be a more than capable replacement for the absent regular shooter Nicola Field. Harvey linked well with Mills and Podbury who created some great feeds in and around the circle making it very difficult for Firebirds defence to have an impact.
Going into the final quarter with a 24 goal lead, Wasps relaxed a little too much and Firebirds came right back into the game. The ball was quickly moved up the court into Firebirds shooting area and goals being converted. Wasps’ defence did their best to disrupt the shooters in this quarter, but rebounds were being picked up and slotted away. Although this was the better quarter for Firebirds, Wasps had established too big a lead for the outcome to be altered and the final whistle blew with Wasps empathic winners.
The respective Players of the Match were Wasps goal attack Julia Harvey and Charlotte Raymont the Firebirds goal attack.
