Wasps Juniors 40, Firebirds 27
Wasps Juniors were again good value for their victory over a much more experienced Firebirds team.
After a pre-match pep talk by Managers, Louise Passmore and Claire Gresham, the girls stepped out on court and stole the first centre and immediately turned it into a one goal advantage!
They then took advantage of their centre and went 2-0 up. Firebirds were not to be outdone and scored themselves with some great teamwork and communication and their first goal was scored.
For the rest of the quarter the ball was fired around the court, but it was wasps who took a 12-7 lead into the break.
The second quarter Firebirds made some changes and it took a while for the Juniors to get used to their new opposition. This gave Firebirds the opportunity to come back into the game and brought the deficit to just two goals by the end of the second quarter.
Again Firebirds made changes going into the third quarter, but this time the Juniors were not intimidated and their fitness kicked in as they covered every inch of the court making it very difficult for Firebirds to find any rhythm to their game. The defensive duo of Lizzie Southwood and Zoe Gresham picked up any rebound and the ball was thrown to each pair of hands of their team mates finally finding the safe hands of either shooter, Mel Mugford or Becca Barnes.
The fourth quarter was a test for the Juniors to hold their nerve going in with a score line of 30 goals to 20 and, to the delight of everyone, this is exactly what they did. The teamwork of the centre court players, Emily Steer, Phoebe Slee and Kate Rickard was undoubtedly the best of the night. Interceptions were being made and not once did any of the girls give up the fight.
At the final whilst it was the Wasps who were wearing the biggest smiles thanks to a 40-27 triumph.
