Budleigh entertained Ottery St Mary who arrived with a team of eight for a mixed friendly.

Honours ended even with the rink scores level at the close, but victory went to Budleigh by five shots.

Despite a late surge by their opponents, Gerry Roberts skipped Brian Alabaster, Lilian Grainger and Stuart Spencer to a seven shot victory while Brian Evans’ side, leading after twelve ends, fought hard before going down by just two shots. The final combined score was 40-35.

An all-male home friendly versus friends from Madeira appeared to be heading for victory for the visitors on both rinks - until the final few ends. Richard Cooper, Ralph Cook, Rob Jerrard and skip John Dill engineered a great escape by scoring nine shots without reply over the last five ends to finish 22 - 20 Ron Tyler’s side completed the Houdini act, taking a four on the final end to win by just two shots.

In the Symes, Robinson and Lee evening league fixture featuring the Budleigh Buzzards and Sidmouth, there were contrasting results on the two rinks.

Paul Griffin skipped Peter Norman and Rod Freer to a comfortable 34-18 win, carding two sixes, one five, three four’s and a brace of two’s.

The Buzzards second triple lost by six shots, but the combined 49-39 score earned the home side the majority of the points on offer.
