The main event of the week at Madeira was the competition for the Edwin Putt Trophy which was played in warm autumn sunshine – perfect bowling conditions for almost the first time this season, writes Jenny Smith.

This is a singles competition for first and second season bowlers and this was well supported this year with 18 entries.

Those taking part had to play three 8-end games in two sections and the winners of each section played a final.

The standard of bowling was excellent for relatively inexperienced bowlers and Sue Croskerry and David Tucker did well to win all three of their mini-games in their respective sections to book their places in the final which David Tucker won.

All those taking part, whether participants, markers, caterers or spectators, enjoyed the day very much.

The Friday night Umbrella finished this week with a party. This event has been well supported this year with 45 bowlers taking part throughout the season and an average of over 20 each Friday evening.

Many new bowlers have taken part, playing alongside more experienced members, in often their first experience of bowling with a competitive edge.

The winner is the person who has accrued the largest shot difference from their top 9 scores. Tony Wiseman emerged the winner on the last night with new bowlers Janet Grundy and David Tucker in silver and bronze medal positions respectively.

Madeira men were disappointed that their representative bowling came to an end this week. Their final Foxlands fixture against Northdown, Plymouth, rained off on Bank Holiday Monday, was played on Friday.

Although Madeira won their home rink, the loss away was such that they lost overall by 36 shots to 44.

On Sunday they played in the quarter-final of the County Trophy at Newton Abbot against Culm Vale and were knocked out of the competition with a loss on all four rinks.

There have been two friendlies this week. Friendly rivals Phear Park came on Thursday with four triples teams – a match which Madeira won by a significant 85 shots to 49.

Winning three of the four triples, Madeira’s Bob Burch and his team of Bill Barber and Howard Rees achieved the best shot difference of the day of 24 shots.

An all-male touring team came from Woolston, Southampton, and narrowly beat Madeira by 138 shots to 134, despite Madeira having won five of the seven rinks.

The only significant shot difference of the day was in favour of the touring team but Madeira’s best performance was again by John Bellamy and his team of Derek Dommett, David Morrish and Greg Fish who won by plus six.
