Three Exeter Chiefs academy forwards have been recruited for the forthcoming season by Exmouth RFC, writes Mark Briggs.
The National League Two South new boys have signed second row Marcus Garratt, back row Todd Lowry and also prop Dan Pullinger. The trio have all been training with the Exeter Chiefs seniors alongside the Exmouth first XI this summer as part of their rugby development programme.
They will continue with their busy schedule by playing for Exmouth first XI and the Chiefs academy as well as trying to impress Rob Baxter in LV Cup games, and not forgetting their college commitments.
Bob Armstrong, a former Chief and newly appointed Exmouth forwards coach said “We are delighted to have all three players on board, in what is sure to be a testing season for our playing resources. All three guys are buying into what we are trying to achieve here, and we are happy to be a part of their rugby development programme”.
“We will be working closely with the Chiefs to manage their game time and put together a rugby training and game programme that will be of benefit to all concerned”, said Armstrong.
He continued by saying “they have benefited immensely from being involved in a full-time, professional environment at Exeter, and will learn a lot from this exposure. With an increased match-day squad needed to what we have been used to in the past, we are well aware our senior squad needs more depth to be able to cope with more intense league demands”.
All three players were in last Saturday’s squad for Exmouth’s first pre-season game away at Plymouth Albion that the Cockles lost 55-14.
It’s a demanding pre-season lined up for the Cockles, but one that director of rugby Chris Wright is relishing. “We do have a big squad and we are looking maximise game time at this stage of our preparations”, said Wright.
