The past week was a busy one at Cricket Field Lane with some great results against local opposition, with wins recorded against Exonia, Topsham and Maderia, writes David Roberts.

Against Exonia, the ladies excelled with an overall win by 26 shots. Ann Vincent, Lilian Grainger and skip Mo Bond won comfortably 21-6, whilst Marion Lacey, Margaret Avery and Di Lowe kept the opposition at bay to record a 17-6 victory. A big thank you, to Lilian and Margaret for playing two matches in a day.

Against Topsham there was an even bigger win for the club as a mixed team won by 50 shots to 16.

Tony Lim, Mike Clark and Joan Shaw kept ahead of their counterparts throughout and whilst it was a close match early on, the Budleigh team pulled away scoring nine shots on the fourteenth end to finish 26-10 winners.

On the other rink, Marion Lacey, Mike Shaw, Don Huish and John Dill kept a big lead throughout and scored 14 points over the last five ends to win comfortably at 24-6.

The final win of the week came in a mixed match against Maderia. Tony Lim, Lilian Grainger, Tony Hanson and Mo Bond won 22-11, whilst, on the other rink, Ann Vincent, Don Huish, Brian Evans and Dawn Graham came through 21-14.

In other matches, the ladies found stronger opposition in the Lane Trophy when they played Maderia, losing on three rinks, but the shining light was the rink of Eileen Burston, Lilian Grainger and skip Dawn Graham, who won 18-16.

The men were in action in the Saturday Interclub competition against Isca Silver and were only victorious on one rink as Keith Edwards, Richard Cooper, Gerry Roberts and John Dill playing away recorded a good win at 21-17.

The other three rinks lost, but at home Bob Clifford, Mike Shaw, Dick Mitchell and David Evans were involved in a close match before being edged out 21-15.

The coming week sees the last match in the Men’s Over-60s League as the club takes on Kingsley and the men look for an improved performance against Dawlish in the Interclub.

The club is involved in friendlies against Maderia and Ottery, whilst there is a vice presidents’ match at Exonia.

In the Budleigh Coast Wealth Management Evening League, the Maderia Bluebirds look to consolidate their lead at the top of the table as they play the Exonia Eagles.
