The September medal and Abraham Salver qualifying round was played at East Devon on Saturday 1 September writes Paul Willoughby.

The Abraham Salver is an inter club competition and two players are selected from each club, one from the group with handicaps between nought and 12 and one from the group with handicaps of 13 to 28.

The final round of the Abraham Salver will be played at East Devon on Sunday, October 7, and the players representing the club will be James Thomas, handicap 2 (or probably less by that time, knowing James!) from division 1 and George Turnbull from division 3 with a handicap of 18.

Ninety players took part in the competition; conditions were good - warm and dry with a variable wind. Some players who had not read their ePheasant magazine were surprised to find themselves driving off the three new championship tees which not only lengthened those holes, but coupled with the long grass (for those who didn’t make the fairways!), made the course a lot longer and more challenging. The championship tees were constructed in 2007 to increase the length of the course for the longer hitters; the length of the course hadn’t changed for years and the Club committee decided early this summer to use them in the monthly medal rounds to test members’ reaction to a longer course; it will be interesting to see the results of the ‘test’ – probably fine for the younger element and low handicappers but too challenging for some of the oldies. Never mind, it’s a pleasure to play on that course whatever its length.

The winner of Division One was James Thomas with a net 68 playing off a handicap of two. James has won the last two monthly medals – excellent play, James. Second was Clive Bennett with a net 69 (5) and third was Bob Martin with a net 70 playing off a handicap of 1.

Division Two was won by Mark Coles with a net 74 (12, second was Steve Harrison, net 74 (14) and third was Bob Horton with a net 74 playing off 9. (We’ve seen his name a few times over the past few months!)

Division Three was won by George Turnbull, net 69 (18) whilst second place went to David Watkins, net 70 (18) and third was Brian Welch, net 73 playing off 15.

There were twelve two’s holed and those dozen players shared a pot of £133.
