The October stableford competition took place at East Devon Golf Club on Saturday 20 October, writes Paul Willoughby.

One hundred and eleven players took to the field on what should have been a high scoring day. Conditions were perfect – no wind at all in the morning, not even a zephyr.

Flags hung limply, probably having a rest after the battering they received in the gale earlier in the week. The course was in superb condition as always so where were the really high scores?

Golf is a curious game in that one can feel on top of the world, having played well the day before and looking forward to repeating that performance on competition day.

The blood is up as we change into our golf shoes and have our five minute practice on the putting green then disaster as we hit the first drive slightly on the heel and the ball rockets into the holly bushes on the left.

Where did that come from when we had such high expectations, and more to the point, can we put it out of our minds for the remainder of the round? Some can, some can’t!

However, notwithstanding the excellent conditions, there were some very good scores and the overall winner was Julian Turnbull with a very creditable 39 points from a handicap of 11. The Turnbull handicap is now reduced to 10, so very well done to him.

The other leading scores were; Division One; 1, Gordon Benzie with 38 points from a handicap of six, now reduced to five; 2, Guy Peters, 38 points (seven) ; 3, Jason Rowbotham, 37 points from a handicap of four now reduced to three.

Division Two; 1, Julian Turnbull with 39 points from a handicap of 11, now 10; 2, Chris Gore, 38 points from a handicap of 13, now 12; 3, Alan Forte, 36 points (10).

Division Three; 1, Rod Ford with 38 points from a handicap of 18, now 17; 2, Paul Baker, 36 points (19); 3, Mark White, 35 points (20)

There was a two’s pot of £172 to be divided between 12 players and Jason Rowbotham scored two of them at the 10th and 13th.
