Exeter Storm continued its unbeaten run in the South West Volleyball League, beating both Yeovil and Wiltshire Mavericks 3-0, last weekend.

This puts them clear at the top of the league, which is an incredible achievement for a club that was only formed earlier this year by a group of local volleyball enthusiasts, led by Ben Fairweather of Ottery St Mary and Vlad Zloy of Exeter.

Exeter Storm Volleyball Club was created to provide local players with the opportunity to play volleyball at an elite level, and hopes to earn a place in the National Volleyball League for next season. It would be the only men’s team in the whole of Devon and Cornwall to compete at this level. The team is making huge strides towards success under the guidance of two experienced coaches.

“Since the team came together they have worked really hard to reach the level of volleyball they will need to succeed at national level. We still have a long way to go but this start is very promising,” said head coach, Arthur Mosley, former national team captain and inductee of the Volleyball England Hall of Fame. Assistant coach Nick Hitt, a former pupil of The King’s School, also played for the Great Britain volleyball team. The club trains at Exeter College and intends to add ladies’, junior and sitting volleyball sessions in the new year. They were recently given a substantial grant from the Co-operative Membership Community Fund.

“It means a lot for us to receive this financial support from Co-op Community Fund, because volleyball is an expensive sport to play. We are constantly looking for additional sponsorship to facilitate the expansion of the club, which would allow us to bring the fun of this game to people of all ages, skills and abilities. It is important for us to realise that, on top of having professional management and coaching teams, Exeter Storm is very much a community project.

Chairman and captain Vlad Zloy said: “We are proud to have players from Ottery St. Mary, Feniton, Exeter, Tiverton, Exmouth, Seaton, Brixham and other corners of Devon and we hope that local communities from those places will join our growing army of players, spectators and friends. ” “What makes this club different is a desire to aim high and work hard for it. Our 5-year goal is to get our first team into the Super-8 League, which is the highest level of volleyball played in the UK. No Devon club has ever done that – and that is about to change.”
