Stone lifts Coronation Cup at East Devon

PUBLISHED: 11:09 01 May 2014

The April stableford was played at East Devon on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.

We had been told that the weather would be grim and at times it certainly was. There was a heavy shower which caught the early starters and players without decent waterproof gear (me included) would have been soaked – I was. The rain was coupled with a strong south easterly wind which made those on the course wish they were still in bed, and those playing later, stay in bed! I mean, who on earth would want to play in such awful conditions? Well apparently 119 people did – a good, though surprising turn out.

However, the miserably wet conditions didn’t last, though the strong gusty wind accompanied the players throughout the day. The wind came from France but instead of bringing smells of baguettes, croissants and garlic which it might on a balmy sunny day, instead it brought a smell of ‘pluie’ (go on, look it up!) and ‘eau de English Channel’ – not so inviting. The Standard Scratch was 74 and the handicaps were ‘reduction only’ – that’s a rarity.

The intrepid (described in my dictionary as, ‘fearless, daring, bold’ – go on, show this to your wives!) players who completed the competition can hold their heads high but the winner who can hold his head highest was David Priestner from Division Two with an astonishing score of 41points – six points better than anyone else in any division and his handicap has been cut from 12 to 10. Excellent play, David - well done.

The competition ran concurrently with the Coronation Cup (open to divisional winners of the stablefords in the preceding 12 months) and the winner of the Cup was Matt Stone from Division One with 33 points from a handicap of five.

The other leading scores were: Division 1; 1, Bill Peaker, 34 points, 9 now 8; 2, Matt Stone, 33 - as above; 3, Mark Lavers, 33 (4); 4, Stephen Phillips, 33 (8).

Division 2; 1, David Priestner, 41 points; 2, Bill Edwards, 35 (11); 3, Cliff Lockwood, 32 (13); 4, John Hall, 31 (14).

Division 3; 1, Richard Bowes, 33 (16 now 15); 2, Brian Welch, 30 (15); 3, Trevor Reeve, 30 (23); 4, Mark Paver, 29 (17).

There was a twos pot of £236 to be shared between eight players.
