Ninety-six seniors played in the monthly Stableford competition at East Devon on Monday, writes Paul Willoughby.

Conditions were as good as they get for the early players but the wind picked up by early afternoon and the later competitors got a soaking.

The clouds were as black as I’ve seen and views of Exeter were obliterated by a really heavy downpour. Have you noticed how the wind picks up underneath a rain cloud? Here’s the official explanation; ready?

‘The strong winds usually occur in a region of strong mid-level height falls, or mid-level tropospheric cooling, which force strong localized upward motions at the leading edge of the region of cooling, which then enhances local downward motions just in its wake. What Gobbledegoop!’

The Boy Scout explanation is that the wind under a rain cloud sucks up the wind faster than the area outside the cloud. Got it?

The player who had no trouble with his wind was Ken Springthorpe with an excellent 43 points from a handicap of 18, now 15. Well done, Ken – extremely good play.

The other leading scores were: 2, Andy Scott, 40 points (7 now 6); 3, Brian Welch, 39 (14 how 13); 4, Ray Ambrose, 38 (20); 5, Ian Sampson, 38 (10); 6, Malcolm Pressey, also 38 (11); 7, Tom Kenny, 37 (17)

There was a twos pot of £91 to be shared between 10 players.
