Newton Poppleford’s drag racing ace Mark ‘Wolfie’ Smith lifted the Southwest Straightliners modified street bike title for the third successive year when he was in action at the Dakota Raceway, Smeatharpe on Remembrance Sunday.

What’s more, making a wonderful ‘honours double’ for the local area, 12-year-old Baxter Williams, who hails from Otterton, was crowned Dakota Street bike champion, which is an honour previously won by Smith before he stepped up in class!

At 11am the action came to a halt and a large crowd stood in silence to mark the occasion and Smith also played his part by adorning his bike for the day with poppies either side of his seat. What’s more, both poppies lasted the full day in their places, even with the rain that fell and the fact that Smith had his bike travelling at 143mph!

Smith says: “It did become a very special day, made all the more special by the fact that the silence at 11am was impeccably observed.”

Smith chalked up a time of 10.21 seconds with a top speed of 143mph and his fastest 60ft time of the day was 1.829 seconds.

As for young Baxter Williams, he completed a new track record by smashing the previous record of 46 rides in a day by completing no fewer than 60, twice landing a new personal best time.

Smith said of his own day’s efforts: “The rain meant I had no chance of any record breaking time attempts. That said, I still had the rear wheel spinning at 140mph whilst going over the line! The tough conditions meant I was almost a full second slower than normal.”

Sunday proved to be a ‘bitter/sweet’ one for Smith as he said an emotional goodbye to his bike in its present form for it is now going away to the race workshop of another drag racing ace – Southend-based Mark ‘Skinny’ Patman – to be fitted with the nitrous oxide gas injection system that will hopefully propel Smith to new records in 2018.

He says: “It was sad to see the bike driven away, but next time I see it will be at the legendary Santapod Raceway in March next year when it will certainly be an all-together different beast with almost half as much power again on top of what I rode with this year! It equates to around 300 bhp to the back wheel alone! The objective being to fire me into new times of eight seconds – bring it on.”
