Liz Smerdon was the only Madeira lady to reach the national finals at Leamington Spa this year, writes Jenny Smith.

She won her preliminary round against Bedfordshire by 21 shots to 10, but was disappointed to lose to Yorkshire in the first round by 11 shots to 21.

However, Liz, with Sue Harriott and Christine Macaulay has made it through to the quarter finals of the two-wood triples which will be played on Friday (August 22) at Braunton.

Jill Perrin and Millie Powell have done well in the section final of the Unbadged Pairs, a new competition this year.

They beat an Axminster duo 24-21 and now play in the quarter finals at Torbay Country Club next week.

It’s been a good week for them as they played with Mick Powell and Keith Weeks in the Axon Cup at Phear Park and won it by plus 17 shots with Topsham a close second on plus 14.

Finally, Nicky Fiddimore and Jacky Howle were disappointed to lose the section final of the Over-55 Pairs against Honiton by just one shot.
