The Seaton Carnival Open Shore competition was fished off Seaton Beach with 44 anglers taking part in the five-hour match, writes Mike Spiller.

Conditions were not ideal, but there were plenty of fish recorded at the Midnight weigh-in.

The weigh-in was done quickly to allow for unwanted fish to be returned to the water. Amongst the fish caught were dogfish, bull huss, mackerel, bass and smoothound.

The best specimen landed on the night, and by a distance, was a bass of 8:14:4 (11.1 per cent) caught by John Turner.

The catch meant Turner bagged the cash pool of £20 for the best single fish caught in the competition.

The runner-up for the best single fish award was Honiton Sea Angling Club member Barry Trevett with a dogfish weighing in at 2:4:8.

Third spot went to Terry Hartnell, also of the Honiton club, with another dog fish that scaled at 2:1:0.

The overall event winner was Simon Skinner from the West Bay Sea Angling Club. He recorded a bull huss of 5:6:8 together with a dogfish of 1:11:12 for a total catch of 136.9 per cent.

Skinner picked up the £75 prize money.

The runner-up was John Turner with that bass of 8:14:4 which earned him £50 and third was netted by Ben Bradstock who weighed in a mackerel and dogfish for 101.6 per cent and a £25 cash prize.

Mike Spiller handed over a £50 donation on the night to the carnival committee, this was some of the proceeds of the entry fee from the competition.
