Sidmouth Tennis Club’s teams struggled both on court and off this past week, writes Lesley Cranston.

First up the ladies had abandon their local derby at Sidford halfway through as rain and light restrictions took hold with the score at 4-1 to the visitors.

The Mixed Doubles team set off to Lympstone, but not a ball was struck!

However, on the same night the Mens B team did manage to see the rain off in their match against Teignmouth and might well have wished for a postponement.

The team of Mike Fletcher and Tom Robins, Bob Hefhill (captain) and John Clarke took on a youthful side whose technique and consistency from the baseline, evidence of good coaching, proved too much for the more ‘senior’ opponents.

The exception to this seniority was young Tom Robins playing his first league match partnered by Mike Fletcher. Heffill and Clarke managed two points in closely contested rubbers, unfortunately unable to capitalise in the championship tie-breaks resulting in a final score of 2-6.

The men’s A were away to Seaton last week and also lost by the same score. The ladies’ B team went to Torquay and came up against solid opposition from one of the largest clubs in the league.

Vici Topping and Kate Truman won their first match in two tight sets but were narrowly squeezed out in the tie-break in the second rubber. The other pairing of Gill Dolling and Jill Shorthouse playing together for the first time lost both their matches resulting in a 3-6 defeat. Overall not the best week for the club’s teams!
