Seagull trouble for Sidmouth lady bowler

Archant

The Sidmouth ladies’ handicap competition was played earlier this week on Monday, writes Susie Bonnell.

Thankfully it was a case of ‘goodbye waterproofs and hello sunhats’, with a morning and afternoon draw seeing a total of 14 players bowling as many ends as it would take to declare six winners to go through to the next round.

One of the most memorable sights of the day took place on rink two during the afternoon session.

Maureen Lamb, playing against Susie Bonnell and using her very noticeable bright coral-coloured cloth to polish her woods, had left it on the edge of the rink while she bowled up from the other end. Down swooped a very cheeky (very large) seagull and swept off with the cloth!

Perhaps it thought it had found some tasty morsel to eat or it was a nice blanket for the fledglings on the Bowls Club roof!

Luckily we had Wilf Radburn from the Sidmouth men’s team present as a spectator and he braved some very angry seagulls to retrieve the cloth from the Club’s flat roof.

There’s certainly never a dull moment when you play at Sidmouth!

  • Re: the ladies bowlsgull incident. Please Susie - technically as there are so many typesbreeds etc they are called gulls not sea gulls. Sorry to be pedantic
