OTTERTON FETE: The Otterton Village fete is taking place on the village green at 2pm on Saturday, July 21, and will include stalls refreshments and a raffle.

All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the church.

-----

EXCHANGE visit: A group of 15 horticultural students from the Czech Republic came to Bicton College recently as part of a European exchange programme.

The students, who attend the Kopidlno Gardening School, are taking part in the ‘How gardens can make our environment friendlier and better’ exchange project which has been funded through the European Union and the British Council’s Comenius programme.

The programme’s objective is to improve the students’ future employment prospects and encourage active European citizenship.

-----

EAST BUDLEIGH: Due to two retirements there is a vacancy for an additional caretaker and cleaner at the village hall.

The pair would be responsible for security, cleaning and the preparation of the hall for events.

The closing date is Saturday (July 14). To apply, call John Shaw on 01395 443359.

-----

BICTON CONFERENCE: More than 140 PE students from across the county attended a sports conference at Bicton College on Tuesday.

A college spokesman said: “This inaugural event aimed to encourage GCSE students to share their ideas of using sport to overcome challenges and enable decision-making based around the Olympic themes of equality, inspiration and courage and determination, plus pathways for careers in sport.”

-----

JUBILEE MUGS: Otterton children who have not yet received their commemorative diamond jubilee mugs should contact the parish clerk, David Ottley, on 01395 567701.

-----

NEW DEPUTY HEAD: A new post of deputy headteacher for Drake’s and Otterton C of E schools has been created.

Mrs Sarah Davies will take up the position on September 4.

Her appointment follows the creation of a formal federation between the two schools in March this year.

Mrs Davies will work at both schools and help with their day-to-day runing, as well as supporting the governing board and headteacher Carron Saunders in the strategic development of the schools.

-----

SCARECROW cash: At least £2,000 will be donated towards the upkeep of All Saints Church and the churchyard in East Budleigh following last month’s highly successful scarecrow festival.

Hundreds of people turned out to the festival, which for the first time saw events arranged for children.

The Friends of All Saints have thanked students at Bicton College, the ‘ladies in the kitchen’ for the cream teas and lunches served, and residents who manned stalls at the event.

-----

BASEMENT EXTENSION: Plans for a basement extension to house a utility and games room, which would also form a new boundary wall at 20 Fore Street, have been lodged with district planners.
