Exe table club held its first tournament of the new season.

Formally known as the Halloween tournament, the club had a ‘split table’ competition.

This is played with normal table tennis rules, but with the two halves of the table pulled apart by two-metres forcing participants to play much longer shots.

In the junior tournament, fifteen youngsters aged from 9 to 17, fought it out in a best of five games knock-out competition.

In the first round Yana Tushingham, the only girl player, had a tough game against Harry Rowland, but went through 4-11, 11-1, 12-10, 11-13, 11-8.

Matthew Wellington put up a good fight against top seeded player Aaron Sansom but was out played in the fifth game.

Tom Christian won in five games against newcomer Adam Jenions, while Chris Wardle, Joe Heard and Cassian Tushingham all went through in three games.

In the quarter finals Chris, Aaron and Tom all won their matches in three games while Tushingham had a harder match against Chris Rogers, but won 3-11, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10.

In the semi-finals, Jenions beat Wardle after five close fought games while Tushingham upped his game beating Christian 11-3, 9-11, 11-3, 11-3. In the final Jenions won the first game in some comfort at 11-6, but then12-10 and 12-10 for Sansom to be crowned the winner for which he received a trophy and a certificate.

Eight adults were split into two groups and battled it out with the top two players in each group going through to the semi finals.

Sean Mills, who is new to the club, but has played for Devon, was paired against Martin Atkin, and took the first game 11-7.

Atkin fought back in the second game, but still lost 12-10 and Mills finished off winning the third game 11-8.

Paul Humphries gave the first game to Howard Back 4-11 but made Back work hard to claim the next two 12-14, 9-11. In the final Mills took the first two games 11-3 and 11-8 before Back took the third 11-5. Mills though then claimed the fourth 13-11 to be crowned winner.
