Women and girls up and down the South West are being given the chance to try rugby for the first time with a series of informal and welcoming taster sessions.

The Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) has teamed up with Women’s SportNet who have launched a ‘Just Try’ campaign to get more women and girls in the UK active in this Olympic year.

After the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) revealed research that identified huge numbers of women keen to participate in ‘informal sport’ but also the barriers preventing their participation, National Governing Bodies, sports clubs and gyms up and down the country have been running thousands of events for women to try sport over the summer. And the ‘Just Try’ sport campaign is bringing them together by listing all opportunities to try sport on one website www.wsnet.co.uk.

David Rose, the RFUW’s Head of Development, said: “The RFUW is delighted to support ‘Just try’ to get more females involved in sport. Rugby offers a wonderful opportunity for women and girls to try a sport that involves teamwork, fitness, fun and a wonderful social environment.

“By offering these informal ‘pitch-up and play’ opportunities we hope that women and girls new to the game will enjoy a quality experience as well as making new friends.”

Paul Reynolds from Women’s SportsNet added:“There are thousands of events for women to ‘Just try’ sport over the summer. “Our website features national sports heroines, video footage, featured players, as well as listing all the women’s sports events happening up and down the country as we look to make sport for women more accessible.”
