Archant

Withycombe Under-7s made their longest trip of the year to take on a strong and fleet-footed Kingsbridge side.

The large number of Withy followers who travelled with the players were certainly left suitably impressed with the Withy performances.

With both clubs clearly healthy in terms of playing numbers it was agreed that a number of matches would take place to ensure all involved got game time and so three sets of three matches were played.

The Withy youngsters got off to a flier with accurate passing and strong running, particularly from Jack Davies, Abigail Cotter and Jack Macdonald-Brown. There was also some mighty impressive determined tagging by Chloe Fellowes and Jamie Thompson.

Withy claimed a clean sweep of victories in the first three games!

Kingsbridge are however a team that do not give up and, much to their credit, they fought back strongly in the next series of games to produce a couple of draws.

Thomas Lawrence produced his best series of performances this year to inspire the players to go even further in the final round of games, and this they duly did. With legs getting weary, and Kingsbridge able to call on substitutes, the youngest Withies pulled out all the stops to record some more wins. The play was aided by superb early passing from all to open up the Kingsbridge defence on numerous occasions.

As the final whistles blew across the pitches it became apparent that Withycombe had had the better of the encounters on the whole.

On the morning nine matches were contested with Withy winning five, two more were drawn whilst just two ended in defeats.

From games one to nine the scores (Withy first) were; 11-5, 9-6, 11-7, 8-8, 7-7, 9-3, 8-9, 5-7 and 12-3.

In all an impressive 80 scores were achieved collectively by the Withy players with Jack Macdonald-Brown leading the way with 11 whilst Otto Montgomery-Ames bagged 10 tries.

There were nine tries for Abigail Cotter, eight each for Kieran Long and Jack Davies and seven for Jamie Thompson.

Abigail Cook and Max Rowley both scored six tries whilst Thomas Lawrence and Charlie Tucker both had nap hands of tries and there were three from Chloe Fellowes and two from Harry Dobrijevic.
