Withycombe Under-11s had mixed fortunes in two matches at Tavistock.

First up Withy took on the home side in the first of their two half hour engagements.

This match turned out to be one that saw both defences boss the proceedings.

Each team looked to play an open game, but were denied space by well organised defensive play in each half. Withycombe spent most of the first half in the Tavistock half, but on

many occasions were held up at the break down which slowed their possession.

The line-outs were evenly contested as were the scrums. The second half seemed to follow the same pattern as the first. Withy went close to breaking the deadlock when held up on the line by the Tavy defence.

Finally the Withy backs found some space with Ben Bolwell switching the play to Oscar Moyle who broke the home defence going over the try line but unfortunately the referee did not see the ball being grounded and awarded a scrum.

The final five minutes saw the home side kicking the ball long with a good chase leaving Withy with some defending to do on there own line.

On the final play of the match the ball came out of the side of a ruck for a Tavy forward pick and dive over for the only score of the match.

The kick was missed leaving the score 5-0. A remarkable feature of this match was that it was the very first time that this group of Withy youngsters has not scored a try in a competitive match and that’s since they started playing four years ago!
