Withycombe Under-10s joined twenty-five other teams from across Devon for the North Tawton Festival.

After a slow start to the competition it all came good for the youngsters as they ended the day as runners-up in the Plate final.

In the group stages they first lost 20-10 to Exeter Chiefs with Charlie Passmore and Paddy McGuinness the scorers.

Next up they bounced back to defeat Tiverton 20-15. In this game Withy looked a yard sharper and tackling of Jack Wood, playing only his second ever game, was outstanding. As was the direct running of Joe Bowden and Erin Assleman. The Withy try scorers against Tivvy were Passmore, McGuinness, Harry Bennett and Sam Skinner.

Withy then met Tavistock in the last eight of the plate competition. Facing Tavistock for the first time in a competitive game Withy were imperious as they powered to a 25-0 win with young Passmore scoring a hat-trick of tries with the other scorers being Harry Bennett and Jack Wood.

Next up was a semi-final meeting with Cullompton who led 5-0 at half-time. Early in the second half the blistering pace of Passmore levelled things up, but neither side could find a winner and the tie went to extra-time. The extra period produced just one further try, scored by the fleet-footed Passmore to see Withy into the Plate final against Torquay.

Injury forced Charlie Passmore off and Torquay bagged a try double to lead 10-0. A James Griffin try got Withy back into contention only for Torquay to score again to lead 15-5 at the break. Harry Bennett made it 15-10 early in the second half, but Torquay finished strongly and scored again. Bennett repeated his scoring feat only for Torquay to do likewise to win 20-15. This left Withy valiant Plate runners-up.

Withy: Charlie Passmore, Harry Bennett, Jack Wood, Samuel Skinner, Ollie Hempstead, Oliver Willis, Paddy McGuinness, James Griffin, Callum Tose, Joe Bowden, Erin Asselman.
