Withycombe Under-7s versus Honiton

Withycombe Under-7s enjoyed a clean sweep of victories in five matches with hosts Honiton.

For many of the youngsters it was a first experience of rugby in ankle deep mud, which, combined with longer grass than usual made for very testing conditions!

It did not seem the sort of day for free-flowing rugby, but that did not deter the enthusiastic and energetic young Withy who tried to move the ball as often as possible.

The opening exchanges saw Withycombe dominate in defence to limit the space to the Honiton attackers.

This led to turnover ball that was capitalised on by Jamie Thompson, Abigail Cook and Kieran Long.

The latter again showed some instinctive defensive thoughts to help himself to many Honiton tags.

On pitch two Withycombe trailed at half-time, with the tries coming from Max Rowley and Harry Dobrijevic.

This was turned around after the break as four unanswered tries saw them take a lead that they would hold onto until the end, with Jack MacDonald-Brown claiming four out of five .

The next round of matches saw the youngest Withies turn on the style with two relatively comfortable wins.

Tyler Gover had another week of improvement as he claimed his first ever tries for the side to the delight of all watching.

Also improving with ever game is Chloe Fellowes who again tagged with determination and added two well worked tries.

The next game turned into the Otto Montgomery-Ames show as he bagged all six tries in a 6-1 win.

However, the rest of the team must be thanked for providing the passes!

The last game of the day saw the teams turn around level before the intervention of Abigail Cotter, as she appeared at the end of every move to cross the whitewash four times.

This second half proved to be a case of girl power, as all three were on the field together for the first time.

The Man of the Match award was won by Tyler Gover, for not only scoring his first tries, but tagging well throughout and not giving up.

A special mention also for Charlie Tucker who played despite not being well and Thomas Lawrence who showed that you do not have to score lots of tries to be very important to the team.

On the whole this was a very good day for Withycombe who continue to improve and impress, the coaches could not be happier.

The try scorers were; Otto Montgomery-Ames (7), Jack MacDonald-Brown (4), Kieran Long (3), Chloe Fellowes (2), Abigail Cotter, Jamie Thompson, Tyler Gover, Abigail Cook, Harry Dobrijevic, Max Rowley and Charlie Tucker.
