Withycombe Under-11s had the rare opportunity to face a team evenly matched in size when they travelled to Teignmouth, writes Lee Randall.

Withy managed to get the first score on the board with Ben Wilkinson scoring in the 11th minute and Will Copper slotted the conversion giving the team a confident starting point.

Teignmouth evened up the score just three minutes later. Withy worked well as a team to get Tom Humphries into a scoring position to provide them with a second try and again the trusty boot of young Cooper added the extras.

The hosts then threw everything they had at the visitors who showed a real determination about their defending, managing to hold up a brace of try attempts before half-time.

After the break some exceptional Withy teamwork led to winger Liam Randall crossing in the corner and this time Tom Humphries tucked away the conversion.

Teignmouth replied instantly with a try and, as the clock ticked down it was difficult to call which team would take the match honors!

Mat Rye repeatedly charged the Teignmouth defence, but was unable to break through.

Some good rucking and tackling by Rory Burston, Mat Rye and Max Rickards eventually saw Will Cornish close the gap to the line providing a skillful hand-off to Randall to score his second try, giving Withies the lead with just four minutes remaining!

Withy fought hard to keep Teignmouth at bay until the final whistle sealed their victory.

The Withy Man of the Match award went to Tom Humphries for a determined all-round performance.
