Withycombe Under-10s suffer first double defeat of the season

PUBLISHED: 11:55 27 February 2014 | UPDATED: 11:55 27 February 2014

Withycombe`s under 10`s eagerly awaited clash with Teignmouth last Sunday did not disappoint the large crowd watching, but unfortunately it didn’t go Withies way and they suffered their first double loss of the season.

Withy welcomed back Harry Williams after a few weeks out and he showed no signs of rustiness.

Game one saw Teigns take the game to Withies and they opened the scoring after sustained pressure on the Withies line. Good rugby was being played from both sides, but Withies final pass going astray didn’t help as Teigns were quick to close down any space Withies tried to find.

The hosts stretched their lead before Harry Bennett`s searing run allowed him to dive over and reduce the deficit.

Withies were being turned over too easily at the breakdown and losing too much of their own ball, allowing the dangerous Teigns too much space which they exploited well to score again. Three late tries from Teigns resulted in a 35-5 loss for the young Withies.

Game two saw many changes from the large squad Withies have and sometimes this can disrupt their play, but it was Charlie Passmore who opened the scoring from the kick-off for Withies before another fine try from the same player opened up a 10-0 lead.

Teigns scored one of their own before weak tackling from Withies allowed Teigns to score four more and open up a 25-10 lead at half time A few stern words from the coaches at half time stirred the Withy boys up and they now started to compete a lot better at the breakdown, with Jacob Holt making inroads in the Teigns half and Charlie Tyler acting as scum half, quick ball allowed Ollie Neal to power over. Further pressure saw Joe Bowden dart over before Teigns restored the lead with two more tries James Griffin and Charlie Passmore completed his hat-trick with another trademark try but alas, it wasn’t to be Withies day as Teigns star player gave our boys the run around to score two late tries and complete a 40-30 victory for Teignmouth.

Team: Charlie Passmore ,Charlie Tyler, Ollie Willis, Ollie Hempstead, Ollie Neal, Harry Bennett, Harry Williams, Samuel Skinner, Callum Toze, Alex Stortenbecker, Jacob Holt, Aaron Humphries, Alfie Gillard, Josh Chisling, James Griffin, Paddy Mcguinness, Erin Assleman
