Withycombe Under-15s were 24-22 winners when they took on Kingsbridge in a match that was played as a 13-a-side contest as the South Devon-based side did not have enough players for a full game.

In what were good playing conditions, the early exchanges were even with a mix of good passing and tackling from both sides.

Kingsbridge scored first with a converted try set up and finished from a good line-out.

Withy hit back and, with Kingsbridge put under pressure, a spilled ball was gathered by Ben Wilkinson who crossed the whitewash and a Will Cooper conversion levelled the match score.

Scrums were uncontested and, from one of them, Finn Musgrove picked up to score in the corner, but the conversion was missed and Withy ended the first half with a narrow advantage.

Kingsbridge also scored first in the second half, this time crossing the line after a fleet footed straight run, but the conversion was missed, and once again the scores were level.

Withy were soon back in the lead thanks to a Joe Graham try under the posts that left a straight forward conversion.

A yellow card was handed out to a Withy player and, while a man down, they shipped another try with Kingsbridge scoring in the corner.

Back came Withy and a second Musgrove try, this time after a typical sniping scrum half run, restored the narrow Withy lead.

In an end-to-end contest, Kingsbridge hit back – although what had seemed a clear knock-on was missed by the match official.

With the score 24-22 and the clock running down, Kingsbridge were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. However, rather than opt to kick to seemingly win the game, they chose to go for a line-out and Withy defended superbly to end the game as narrow winners.
