Withycombe Under-15 action from the meeting with Saracens

Withycombe Under-15s eased their way into the last four of the Devon Plate with an excellent 18-12 success at Teignmouth.

Withy began well and, when the Teigns conceded an early penalty, Will Cooper stepped forward to rifle the ball between the uprights.

With solid defence and slick handling going forward, Withy looked impressive and they went further ahead when awarded a second penalty, this time for a high tackle, and once more Copper fired the ball over.

Teignmouth found their feet and began to apply pressure, but, despite the South Devon side running smart lines and winning good ball in the rucks, Withy impressively won almost every first tackle!

Going forward, quick ball from a Withy scrum was followed by good running from Matt Shaw-Smith and, after fast hands got the ball out to Will Cornish, he chipped head, ran on and gathered the ball himself to take it over the line and a successful Cooper conversion took Withy into the half-time interval with a 13-0 lead.

Withy made a number of changes at the start of the second half and, with Teignmouth making a determined start, and punishing some Withy unforced errors, the Teigns got a try back, crossing on the blind side to score in the corner.

The game then became something of a stalemate with play congested into the middle third of the pitch before Cornish got the ball out on the wing, shrugged off a number of challengers before crossing in the corner.

Teignmouth scored their second try late on, but Withy were not to be denied and celebrated at the final whistle, with their place in the semi-finals confirmed.

The Withy Man of Match award was shared by Tom Real and Solomon McIntyre for their solid defensive work.
