Withycombe suffered a disappointing afternoon at their Raleigh Park headquarters as they slipped to a 19-17 defeat at the hands of a Wessex side winning only their second game of the Tribute Cornwall and Devon League campaign.

Wessex made a flying start and bagged a second-minute try from recent signing Nathan Banks.

The Exeter-based side added a second try from Dean Meldon and with both conversions successfully slotted by Jason Williams, held a 14-0 lead midway through the first half.

Things got worse for the home side as Wessex scored a third try through flanker Raffy Zappia.

Withy had their chances in the first half, but were unable to apply any sort of a finish to some promising moves until, with five minutes of the half remaining, Andrew Dudley crossed and Withy trooped off at the break trailing 19-5.

The second half began with Withy in the ascendency and they were on the score sheet for the second time in the game when Alex Taylor crossed the whitewash and he got up to convert his score.

When Tom White went over for the third home try, Withy were within two points of the Wessex score and there were still a good 30 minutes of the contest remaining.

Both sides had kicking opportunities to add to their scores in the latter stages with Wessex seeing a kick come back off the uprights and Taylor sent two kicks just wide of the mark, but there were no further points and Wessex took the match honours with a narrow win.

On Saturday (December 9) Withy travel to Plymouth Argaum.
