Withycombe ladies sit proudly top of the South West South Two table after a terrific 21-0 success at St Austell.

Withy travelled to Cornwall with a squad of 19 and it was a good job they did as the home side were short on numbers and so five of the Withy ladies turned out for the hosts to set up a 14-a-side contest!

Withy began well and particularly impressive in the opening stages was the strong running of Abi Chalk and Charley Keirle.

They took the lead with a try from Molly Tregedeon and Harley Paver slotted the conversion.

It was Tregedeon who again crossed the home try line to add to the lead – this time her try coming after quick hands got her away and she then showed the home side a clean set of heels in a sprint to the try line. Once again the conversion was tucked over by the trusty boot of Paver.

After soaking up some home pressure Withy extended their lead when a clearance kick from Paver was chased down by Claire Stoakes and Beckie Stephens and, following a ruck, Stoakes bagged the ball and ran clear to the line.

The second half was played as a 12-a-side contest and both sides seemed to struggle with the reduced numbers and no further points were scored at either end of the pitch. The game was sadly cut short following an ambulance call for a St Austell player and Withy, as a club, have sent their very best wishes for a speedy recovery to the unfortunate player.

The journey home, on a bus filled up with a large travelling support, was a fun one and the ladies can now look forward with increasing optimism to the games ahead.

The ladies’ next match is a friendly at home against newly formed Bude ladies on November 5 and their next league outing is not until a meeting with Newton Abbot on December 3.
