Withycombe colts were 44-0 winners when they visited Exmouth for a Devon Colts Merit Table derby meeting, writes Richard Blyth.

Withy made a bright start and scored an early try, but some bright attacking play from the home side meant that the first quarter of the contest was end-to-end with both defences kept busy!

The effectiveness of the Withycombe pre-season training was evident with some slick passing and kicking which maintained pressure on the home side.A well-timed quick chip over the heads of the defensive Exmouth line saw Aaron Lee break through to steal the ball and touch down for a try and half-time arrived with Withy 17-0 to the good.

Three early second-half tries put Withy in total charge and they continued to dominate the contest through to the final whistle.

Exmouth’s new colts side played well in their first competitive match in the mixed age group. However, despite the home side demonstrating some fine rugby, the younger Withy colts won the day with their team largely unchanged from last year.

Despite the long summer break, Withycombe have been able to maintain the teamwork, skills and cohesion that proved so successful last season resulting in opportunities that saw eight different try scorers with Harry Neath-Rogers, Jason Farrant, Oscar Moyle, Vinnie Neath-Rogers, Ben Dawson, Aaron Lee, Ben Bolwell and Josh Arbury all crossing the whitewash, whilst Jason Farrant slotted a brace of conversions.
