Archant

Both Exmouth Town and Exmouth RFC suffered more weather woe when their first fixtures of 2014 fell to the weather, writes Steve Birley.

Whilst both the Southern Road side and the Cockles are looking all right with their remaining fixture lists neither could do with having too many more matches to rearrange!

Both have been starved of home matches and the vital revenue those games bring, especially over a festive period.

Town have played just one South West Peninsula League Premier Division game since November at Southern Road, that a December 14, 5-0 mauling of Tavistock.

Town have played exactly half their league season with 19 gone and 19 to go. They have three more this month, Saturday’s visit from Newquay is followed by a trip to Elmore before the January 25 visit of St Austell.

If the next three home games are played it will see Town begin February with 16 league matches to play in the remaining 14 weeks of the season.

For the Cockles, locked in a desperate battle to extend their stay in the National Two (S) division for more than the one season, it’s a little more congested.

They have seen their last two games cancelled and will be hoping the weather eases to allow them action at London Irish Wild Geese on Saturday.

Like Town, the Cockles have played just one home game since late November and they have only one this month now, the January 18 meeting with Dings Crusaders.

After the weekend the Cockles will have just three ‘spare’ match days and they too can ill afford any more cancellations if they are to avoid a congested end of season run-in.
