Topsham pull off minor coup with Luff signing

TOPSHAM have pulled off a minor coup by signing former Exeter Chiefs wing Jason Luff, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Luff left Sidmouth at the tail end of last season, where he had been player-coach, for an assistant’s role at Brixham.

Things didn’t work out for Luff at Brixham and he parted company with them on good terms in late October.

It was next stop Chard for Luff, where he was again combining playing and coaching.

Nothing really went wrong at Chard, but after a couple of months Luff realised he wasn’t really enjoying the thrice-weekly grind.

And when you live and breathe rugby for a living - Luff is a development officer for the RFU covering East Devon and West Somerset - it is possible to have too much of the same thing. That’s why Luff has joined Topsham.

‘Chard is a great club with some smashing people, but the travelling soon became an issue,’ said Luff.

‘My house to Chard for training was 30-odd miles each way, which on top of work wasn’t really feasible.

‘Topsham is the nearest club to me and takes five minutes there and five minutes back.

‘I have scratched my coaching itch for now and intend just to turn up and play.’

Colin Milkins, the former Withycombe hooker who coaches at Topsham, said he was delighted to have Luff on board.

He added: “He is a quality player and seeing him come to us may encourage a few more players looking for an ambitious club to head our way”
