Withycombe 8:7 Teignmouth

Withycombe under 7s entertained Teignmouth on a bright morning, but with conditions under foot that were very heavy from the overnight rain.

Due to being short of numbers Curtis Fraser very sportingly agreed to play for Teignmouth during the games.

The second game got under way and it was apparent that legs on both sides were getting tired due to the heavy pitch!

Again Withycombe took the lead with Jack Greaves and Joe Gosling crossing the line twice each. However, Teignmouth came back strong whenever they were down and the halftime score saw the teams’ level at 4-4.

The start of the second half proved to be the turning point of the match as Withycombe ran in four unanswered tries with Freddie Burnard and Lewis Alford adding their names to the score sheet, before Joe Gosling once again showed how to finish in style as he raced clear down the line to leave the Teignmouth defence stranded for what proved to be the match winning try.

With a lead the coaches took the chance to try various new combinations with a view to forthcoming games.

This period also saw a debut handed to Tyler Gover who acquitted himself very well.

Teignmouth did close the gap, but the result was never in any serious danger with Withycombe emerging the deserved victors.

Jack Greaves and Joe Gosling each finished with a hat-trick of tries whilst the other two scores came from Freddie Burnard and Lewis Alford.

Jamie Thompson was named Man of the Match after scoring his first try and was also tenacious in the tackle and is another player who is visibly improving week after week.

Special mention must also go to Curtis Fraser who whilst playing for Teignmouth, gave absolutely everything and stopped many a Withycombe attack.

The coaches were especially pleased with these performances. Despite missing several players, the team are becoming hard to score against and are really supporting each other brilliantly in attack.
