Exmouth 15:25 Withycombe

Exmouth Under-10s hosted neighbours Withycombe and with worries about the playing surface just the one game of 30 minutes was contested.

With both teams having large squads in attendance it was agreed that different sides would contest each half.

The Cockles dominated the first ten minutes, pegging Withy back in their own half. However the visiting defence was good and they resisted the best of the Cockles efforts.

The Exmouth pack of Harry Sprague and the Neath-Rogers twins, Vinney and Harry, bossed proceedings, helping the Cockles to go through the phases, but they were unable to convert food ball and territory possession into points.

Having resisted for much of the half Withy broke away twice in the latter stages scoring a try each time to take a lead into the break.

Fresh legs were introduced across the pitch for the second half. Withy began the brightest and quickly notched a third try. The Cockles persisted and their hard work and enterprise was rewarded when Stewart Masters broke through the Withy line only to be brought down a few metres short, Toby McConeghy was on hand though to gather the ball and score the Cockles first try. The Withy response was immediate as they struck with two more tries.

One player to stand out in the second half was Olly Cowley who was strong in attack and defence, ultimately his penetrating runs resulted in a penalty being awarded for a high tackle. From the penalty Cowley was on his way again when he was tackled he laid the ball back beautifully for Masters to pass out to Blu Sandy who crossed to score his first try for Exmouth.

The visitors were being penalised for high tackles throughout the contest and, when McConeghy was brought down just short of the line, the referee did not hesitate in awarding a penalty try.

Then Cockles can take many positives from the game despite slipping to a 25-15 defeat. It was certainly a good game for the spectators played out by two well-matched and very committed outfits.

The Player of the Match award went jointly to the Cockles pack of Sprague and the Neath-Rogers brothers. Olly Cowley was awarded the honour for Tackler of the Match.
