Archant

Withycombe Under-7s switched venues owing to a waterlogged Topsham pitch and entertained the Tops instead.

The conditions at Raleigh Park were very heavy and this made it a real test for the youngsters.

With both Club having large squads it was decided to play two games simultaneously. As the matches started it quickly became apparent that the sides were evenly matched.

Abigail Cook lead the try scoring honours on pitch one in a contest that saw all the Withy youngsters put in sterling shifts with some good running and support play from Max Rowley and Jack Macdonald-Brown. However, Withy were ultimately undone by too many missed tags.

Despite slipping to a brace of defeats there was much for the Withy coaching staff to be pleased about, particularly on the support play which is worked on in training and which is improving week by week in games.

In the games featuring the other Withy team the results were very different as they bagged a pair of wins. In these matches the Withy attack was again led by Jamie Thompson and superbly backed up by the whole side who all managed to score. In defence Kieran Long proved to be a terrier who didn’t miss a tackle, and a well marshalled defensive line was on display from all with Charlie Tucker, Thomas Lawrence and Otto Montgomery-Ames all making valuable tags.

The biggest cheer of the day came when Tyler Gover saw a gap from a restart and ran the length of the pitch to score in the corner.

The youngest Withies team now has a well deserved Christmas break and are back in action on January 6 when they travel to Exeter Chiefs.

The Withy Under-7 scorers on the day were; Jamie Thompson 8, Kieran Long 6, Abigail Cook 4, Otto Montgomery-Ames and Jack Macdonald-Brown 3, Abigail Cotter and Max Rowley 2, Thomas Lawrence, Tyler Gover and Charlie Tucker.
