Archant

Exmouth 19, Honiton 15.

The Cockles Under-15s made a winning start to then new season with a fine win over their East Devon rivals.

They made a sparkling start with the Cockles clearly looking determined not to be out-muscled by a team who had beaten them heavily in the past two encounters.

A dream start saw them recover the ball from a wayward kick. Full back Caleb Bills made good ground with some tricky running and presented the ball back. The forwards then secured great ball with Josh Wickes using the wide pass to Connor MacDonald and the first try was on the board!

Honiton recovered to level the score 5-5, but it was Exmouth who went in to half-time 12-5 up, MacDonald scoring the try with George Mears converting. After the turnaround Honiton showed why they can be dangerous in open play, scoring two tries, they had the lead 15-12. Resolute defence and much improved phases of play ensured that Exmouth stayed in touch in this see-saw encounter. Caleb Sampson put his body on the line on a number of occasions to help the team in attack and defence. With one minute on the clock Exmouth were seeking the decisive score. Honiton defensive attentions were drawn to stopping the ever destructive Joe Harris, the young Cockles used the extra space to send MacDonald over for his hat trick try.

Mears kept his cool and slotted a great conversion to seal an outstanding victory.

A healthy turn-out of supporters gave both sets of players loud applause at the final whistle in appreciation of their collective efforts.

What was clear from the overall performance was that the hard work out in by all in the pre-season period has clearly been of benefit given the pace and power of this display.

Team: Caleb Bills, Jamie Davies, Charlie Garratt, Jake James-Graham, Joe Harris, Drew Jobson, Oscar Kilvington, Connor MacDonald, George Mears, Keenan Paver, Caleb Sampson, Jake Sharp, Owen Smith, Joe Walker, Josh Wickes, Jake Williamson.
