Withycombe Under-16s emerged as 37-34 winners after a classic encounter at Teignmouth.

The game got off to a lightning quick-start with Withy kicking off and moving into a maul that saw the home side pushed back towards their line.

Turnover ball was used well and spun out for Josh Arbury to cross in the corner for what was an unconverted try.

Within minutes the tone for an end-to-end contest was set as the Teigns replied with an unconverted try of their own.

Soon after play was again back in the home half and, after a terrific burst of some 30-yards by Arbur, the ball found its way to Joe Blyth, who scored down the blind side.

Back came Teignmouth and this time, with a conversion to follow a try under the posts, the home side led 12-10.

The next slice of action saw the ball bravely taken in to contact by Aaron Lee before it was off-loaded to Kyle Parry to score and Withy trooped off at the break leading 15-12.

An early second half try edged the home side back in front, but a powerful response from Withy produced two tries in quick succession, both scored by Jason Farrant – the first launched following a series of terrific tackles by the Neath-Rogers brothers.

The Teigns hit back with two quick tries of their own and, suddenly, the lead was back with the home side at 34-25.

From a Withy kick to touch, possession was won and the ball spun well out wide to Jake Lewis to score and a successful Josh Saunders conversion left just two points between the teams with Withy trailing 34-32.

Inside the final five minutes Withy were again pressing towards the home line, but twice they were thwarted before Ben Bolwell saw a gap and went through it to score the winning try.
