Withycombe combined their under-9 squad for two games against Kingsbridge, that saw the visitors win the first with the second ending all square at 3-3.
The conditions underfoot were very difficult for the players as the mid-morning thaw produced plenty of mud for the players to negotiate!
The second game again saw Kingsbridge dominate the opening period during which time they ran in two unanswered tries.
Withy did compete in the first half with a feature being the way they developed play and applied pressure from it. However, they went into the break trailing 2-0.
After a lengthy half-time discussion it was a reinvigorated Withy who began the second half. Straight from the re-start Ben Wilkinson ran in a trade mark try to halve the deficit.
A good period of sustained pressure saw the Withy boys camped in Kings half launching a series of attacks that were well defended. The pressure built up until scrum-half Will Cooper darted down the blind side before going over then Kingsbridge line to level things up at 2-2.
More continued good play from the team saw repeated rucking and mauling as they edged ever nearer the Kingsbridge line. Eventually it was Tom Humphry who showed good to land a well deserved try to put Withy into the lead for the first time.
A strong Kingsbridge side fought back to level a tough, but enjoyable game.
Tom Humphry was named man of the Match, in particularly for the way he kept crashing into contact and keeping possession
