Archant

Withycombe Under-9s took on Honiton in two entertaining matches that saw them emerge unbeaten with a draw and a win.

First up produced a game of excellent defending in which tackling was at a premium and fittingly a close encounter ended al square at 15-15.

Harry Bennett, Charlie Passmore and Alfie Gillard were the Withy try scorers.

The second game saw the young Withies really turn on the style with some wonderful attacking rugby that took them to a 40-20 triumph.

Sam Skinner opened his account for the season and there were single scores for Joseph Bowden, Harry Bennett, Ollie Hempstead and Callum Tose.

However, the main feature of the second game was a fantastic hat-trick from Joe Farmer who was unselfishly set up by Charlie Passmore which resulted in them both receiving the title of Withy Man of the Match.

Withy Junior chairman Ian Skinner said: “It was one of those occasions when every player really did put a splendid shift in for the team. One of the coaches was even heard to remark that it was the best he’d seen this set of youngsters play in the three years they have been playing together and that augers very well for their individual and collective futures.”
