Exmouth edged out by Cornish All Blacks

Cornish All Blacks 18, Exmouth 17

Once again the rugby gods were not with the Cockles as another herculean effort came to nothing as they were ultimately defeated by the narrowest of margins.

The first half was a relatively quiet affair with the home side leading 8-0 at the interval courtesy of a penalty and a try.

Early in the second half the Cockles fell further behind as a second try was conceded. George Meadow reduced the arrears with a penalty, but saw a second miss the target.

A yellow card for All Black Lewis Webb was seized upon by Exmouth and a home error was capitalised on with referee Paul Kimber awarding the Cockles a penalty try.

Meadows slotted the conversion and the gap was closed further.

Now in the ascendency the visiting faithful began to believe they might witness a second successive victory.

However, as has been the way for much of this season, just as it seemed the Cockles might be in a position to go on and close the game out the opposition won, and slotted, what proved to be a crucial penalty.

The Cockles immediately returned to the front foot and the hosts were forced to defend deeply, something they did manfully, with the only blemish, from their point of view, being a late try from Alexander Brown, converted by Meadows to bring the Cockles to within a single point of the Cornish All Blacks.

Sadly, and as has been for much of the season, the final score was narrowly in favour of the opposition and once again the margins between success and failure at this level were proved to be very fine indeed.

Three games remain in the Cockles National Two (S) season, the first of which sees Southend at the Imperial Ground on Saturday.
