Exmouth 5, Taunton 45.

On the back of a victory over Crediton in the previous outing, the young Cockles went into this game with high hopes against a team they had beaten handsomely earlier in the season, writes Andy Lawson.

However, this was a very different Taunton outfit to that which went down to a heavy defeat against this Exmouth team.

The home side spent much of the first half defending inside their own half and it took only eight minutes for Taunton to register their first try.

With a good set piece, a strong counter rucking game, and the intent to move the ball out to the wide channels, Taunton added to their tally on 14 minutes when their right wing benefited from a charged-down kick, to touch down in the corner.

On one of the few first half Exmouth incursions into opposition territory a rolling maul nearly half the length of the pitch took the ball deep inside the Taunton-22 only for a costly knock-on to turn over possession! The visitors added two further tries before the interval to take a 17-0 lead into the break.

The second half began as the first had ended with Exmouth defending defiantly to save a couple of almost certain Taunton scores. However, the pressure was soon to tell with Taunton adding a further four tries before the end of the match. The final ten minutes of the contest did belong to the home side as the Cockles showed real strength of character to come back strongly and put sustained pressure on the opposition try line. Eventually the pressure paid when, after some good carrying by Andrew Wheeler and Tarquin Kerton-Johnson, Taiyla Young bulldozed his way over the line for a consolation try.
